Whiting Dry Fly CapesWhiting Farms, Inc. is the largest producer of premium quality fly tying feathers in the world. It also now has the broadest range of feathers, and steadily expanding. The mission of Whiting Farms from its inception in 1989 has always been to be THE supplier of the finest quality fly tying feathers for the tiers of the world.

Cape or Saddle?

The fly tier's choice between buying either a cape or saddle is determined primarily by the range of fly sizes they intend on tying.  Dry fly capes provide a much greater range of sizes than saddles do. This is because as the cape hackle feathers transition from the top of the rooster's head down the back of its neck, the feathers get gradually and progressively larger in the sizes of flies they will hackle. This range extends from tiny "midge" flies (i.e., size 18 to 26), through the mid-range of sizes (i.e., 12 to 16), clear down to the large sizes (i.e., 6 to 10).

Conversely, dry fly saddle pelts have a considerably narrower range of hackle sizes, but many more flies' worth within their range. For example, one Whiting dry fly saddle might have predominantly size 14's and 16's with some size 18's, while another Whiting dry fly saddle might have predominantly size 14's and 12's with some size 10's. So the fly tier who anticipates tying a wide range of dry fly sizes is better served by a cape pelt, while the tier who is predominantly tying within a two or three hook size range is economically better off choosing a saddle pelt.

Grading

First of all, Whiting's cape grades does not denote higher or lower quality dry fly hackle. All hackle from Whiting Farms is of the highest quality. Rather, the grade denotes breadth of size range and usable feather length in capes, with quantity of flies and range of sizes increasing from Pro-Grade to Platinum. Whiting Farms chose to designate their principal pelt grades with the Olympic medallions of Gold, Silver and Bronze, to distinguish their grading system from all other hackle suppliers.
